Hello folks.. I am quite new here to your site and just joined your group but I see there hasnt been much conversation for the Last YEAR!
I am always in the fray when the topic turns to Play for Pay so Heres my very late TWO CENTS!
Yes you can certainly make money Playing music but you have to set the Bar yourself and not expect anyone to offer what you're worth. I know every point each one of you made is absolutely true but you cant let it discourage you in commanding a price if thats your bread and butter!
We make great money when we are on the road but its very hard to get a gig in your own hometown for a good price no matter who you are or how good you are. Even Christ wasnt a prophet in his own hometown.
Sadly other musicians are each others very worst enemy as many will play for free or beer just for the fun and craic which makes it harder for those trying to make a way in the business to get paid.
I dont know anyone who had a new deck put on their home by offering the crew all the beer the could drink so why should that be the way for Musicians who I certainly considered at the very least "Skilled Tradesmen"
HOWEVER.. even with all of it what it really boils down to is.. set a price and stick to it. If you are realistic about your level of play then you should be realistic about your level of Pay.
We;ve set our bar at $100 per musician just to get us out the door. If you can't get that then the folks can't afford live music. Of course you can make exceptions but $100 per musician for the first hour and then $50 per hour there after will keep you busy enough if you're good enough.
