This message from Joanie Madden of Cherish The Ladies is currently being sent around to Irish musicians and fans of Irish music. It's sad news.

Hi..
I just wanted to relay the sad news that my father passed away last evening after a fall last Saturday on the stairs. It was a freak accident where he fell just 2 steps but hit his head hard enough on a ledge to break 2 vertebra in his neck that left him paralyzed.

Dad underwent two difficult spine surgeries this week to try and repair the vertebrae in his neck, unfortunately the surgeries were unsuccessful and he passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by my mother and six brothers and sisters - all of us able to tell dad how much we loved him, admired him and cry with him.

He was a hell of a man and I am proud to call him my father. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers, messages and emails.
