I must say, cranking up the ol' iPod Nano and listening to Clare FM and all the ads for Evergreen Health Food Store in Galway eases the long ride home from Princeton. (And yes, I am concerned about global warming.) You'll laugh, but hearing the ads -- including the interesting series of public service ads designed to get listeners' behinds into the pubs -- is sometimes more fun than the music. Are there any other good podcasts of that sort?
I'm pretty sure I've heard some strange stuff there, too, although never Solas or Flook. Or maybe it was Paula Carroll's Wednesday show. Anyway, there was a night last week when I heard trad on sax. Not sure how I feel about that. I mean, I'm a pretty flexible, open-minded guy and all, but even I have my limits.
Was it the new At the Racket CD with John Carty and Brian McGrath? If so, it is an awesome CD, I've played it on my show several times. Here are two bits of sax trivia (SAX...get your mind out of the gutter!): 1. The Gallowglass Ceili Band from the North of Ireland and the Donal Ring Ceili Band from Cork City both featured sax in their playing. 2. Kevin McGillian played the sax before playing the box. If you want to hear any of this music let me know and I'll send it on to you. One other bit of news re: Clare FM: Joan Hanrahan who also does a show will be returning to Philadelphia in May with the Turloughmore Ceili Band. I saw her in Ennis at the Trad Festival along with several others from the band and they're really looking forward to returning. I was at a session in the Auburn Lodge that weekend anchored by the Keville Sisters as well. "If it's music you want, go to Clare..." (Thanks Christy Moore!)
My plan is to get a car kit for the iPod so I can pretend I'm driving along the Coast Road in Clare instead of ugly old Route 1 in Lawrenceville frickin' New Jersey.
I thought I was the only one who was crazy enough to download the Trad Podcasts to my IPOD. It is great to know that at least two people on this side of the pound have a chance to listen to this wonderful music. Lately some people from the Boston area have been contacting them with Doolin related stories, so I know there are other listeners out there, but maybe not on IPODs
I run a set dance group and have had a great deal of fun editing the podcasts to cut out the Irish Vintners ads and playing them during the break. The ad in November about stopping flattulating and going out to the pub was classic.
I have been raving to a friend about the music, and she found your site. She could not wait to tell me there was another Clare FM Ipodder out there
