About a year ago I took up the bodhran (Why is everyone running away?) and would REALLY like to meet up with someone who can teach me in person the right and wrong wy of doing things. When I go to a session I leave the goat at home and just watch... so the fiddlers don't have to worry about me ruining their tunes, but I WOULD like to play it at a session someday. Anyone bodhranists up for teaching a lesson or two?

Sounds like he would charge for instruction. I was looking more for a mentoring session since I'm a bit tight on cash these days. I live in NJ about 40 minutes (without traffic) from Philly, but I work in center city. Perhaps a workshop might be a bit less pricey. Know his schedule off hand? Also, I'm not a member of the Irish Center...are those events open to non-members?
I am also looking for bodhran instruction. Willing to pay and travel within reason. I live in S. Jersey. I am mainly a guitarist but have always wanted to learn the bodhran properly. Vince Mallon depaulmallon@yahoo.com
I was going to recommend Ed Clark to you before, after reading your request, and am glad to see he offered to help you out on his own. I first met Ed at Philly sessions in the late 70's where he was an exceptional singer and bodhran player and continues to be both to this day. I have often been inspired by Ed's bodhran playing as well as his singing. His bodhran playing is heavily grounded in the style of Peadar Mercier, who played with the Chieftains from 1969 to 1976 and who is father of bodhranist Mel Mercier. As a musician, I appreciate Ed's knowledge of the music which is reflected in his style. He's always willing to share what he knows and never charges a cent.
